Backpacking is the Next Tourism way

Bengaluru: July 15, 2017

AAO Hostels flagged off its travel fellowship today with an aim to promote the backpacking culture in India to encourage more youngsters to travel and adopt hostelling & backpacking culture. The event took place at NASSCOM Startup Warehouse, Bangalore where Mr. Hari Nair, Founder, HolidayIQ addressed fellows and audience in his keynote speech saying, “People should be ready and open to go to the places which don’t have facilities. Tourism can change the future of India. Backpacking can make this happen”.

A number of travel technology startups and hostel startups in Bengaluru also participated in the event and shared their views on backpacking in India.

Mr. Mahendra Pyati, Co-Founder, Aao Hostels thanked KSTDC hostels, Jungle Lodges & Resorts, and other private hostels for collaborating and make this event a grand success. He mentioned that selecting 8 backpackers from India among 150 applicants was a bit challenging but in the end, Aao could select photographers, novelists, HR Professionals, Writers and Bloggers. He specially thanked Karnataka Tourism and Tourism Minister, Honourable Mr Priyank Kharge for the immense support.

More about the Fellowship

The fellows will receive a unique opportunity to document and publish the various travel stories that this vast country has to offer. The selected fellow-travelers in their 15 days of fellowship will be travelling pan-India and would be covering 22 states/UTs and 105 cities/towns. The event at AAO Hostels had a training session for the fellow-travelers on disaster management, social media handling tips, camera handling techniques and understanding the law & security policy which will be useful for them during their travel fellowship program.

The fellowship is an attempt not only to record the interesting accounts from different periods, and walks of life that these places offer, but also to provide a foundation for people having the zeal for travel and look forward for being digital nomads, fulfilling their vision of turning this passion into a vocation.

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” – Lao Tzu

With extensive research and rigorous logistical planning going into building the itineraries, our fellows will be heading out to backpack solo across specific locations in the country, in less than a month with the purpose of further understanding the culture and know-how of these places, making these spaces more accessible for our readers by sharing their stories and of course, having fun and creating memories on the go.

In short, it is a platform for backpacking and hostels, be it in the travel sense or business. We, the pioneers of this new trend in India, welcome the rising culture of backpackers’ hostels and wish to cater the people with itchy feet at economical rates.

Aao Hostels was started by Saurabh Jain and Mahendra Pyati in December 2015 with backpackers’ hostels in Koramangala and served over 5000 Travellers from across the globe. In September 2016, we were the chosen ones by the Government of Karnataka to receive a grant after we won the open challenge that invited proposals from tourism start-ups. Apart from creating a backpackers’ network in India, Aao Hostels is looking to expand in various urban and tourist locations by opening up more hostels, franchising the brand and build a comprehensive hosteling and backpacking ecosystem for people traveling across India.
